Quick Overview of Regions and Availability Domains in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure
This tutorial provides an introduction to regions, availability domains and fault domains in Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
As of this writing, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) has 40 regions spread all over the globe. On Sept. 12, 2022, Oracle released the 40th data centre in Madrid, Spain. It’s the only region in Spain.
The region identifier and key are eu-madrid-1
and MAD
respectively. The region has only one availability domain (AD).
What is a region?
A region in OCI is a geographic location where your resources are hosted. When you log in to OCI and go to create a virtual network or server, one of the essential information you must provide is the geographic area.
Regions are independent and can be located across countries or continents. You might ask, based on which criteria should I choose a region?
One reason is to achieve better performance.
For example, if most of your customers are located in Germany, it may make sense to choose Frankfurt (eu-frankfurt-1
